FAQ:

The initial phase of healing where the gum and soft tissue knits over the top of the socket takes around two weeks on average. Bony healing underneath this takes longer – around two months in most cases. This means that subsequent treatments (bridges, implants, dentures etc.) need careful planning to manage any shrinkage which occurs during this period.

We have fabulous modern anaesthetics which provide excellent pain relief. Your dentist will make sure you are comfortable throughout.

Your dentist will talk you through the after-care needed to maintain the area. Generally, we don’t recommend rinsing and spitting for at least 24 hours after having a tooth removed. Vigorous mouth-washing in this period can cause bleeding and increase risk of complications such as dry socket.

When is Tooth Extraction Needed.

Tooth extraction may be recommended if:

  • A tooth is severely decayed or damaged
  • There is a dental infection that cannot be treated with root canal therapy
  • A tooth is causing overcrowding
  • Gum disease has weakened the tooth support
  • A wisdom tooth is impacted or painful

We always aim to save teeth where possible before recommending extraction.
