When a tooth has been more extensively damaged or is already restored with large fillings, we might consider crowns or onlays as a method of rebuilding the tooth. Dental crowns are often used to repair and protect broken or heavily filled teeth.

A crown is a metal or ceramic covering which fits over the whole tooth in a similar manner to a thimble fitting over a fingertip. Because it encircles the tooth, it protects the remaining tooth structure. An onlay is similar in the sense that it fits over the tooth like a flat cap – again protecting
the remaining tooth structure from your opposing teeth. The difference is that an onlay relies on being bonded to the tooth with an adhesive resin cement. After your dentist has carried out the necessary tooth preparation, a 3D scan or mould of your teeth is taken. This is sent to a dental lab technician who makes the crown or onlay for the following visit.

In the meantime, you’ll have a temporary version in place.
