Each case is unique, but most cases would take between six and 18 months to finish. Duration is dependent on complexity and the tooth
movements required.

In the initial stages, fixed braces can rub slightly whilst you adapt to having them in your mouth. However, most people adapt quickly. When the wires are changes and new elastics placed at follow-up appointments, there can be some mild tenderness while the teeth adapt to the changes, but this is generally easily managed.

The stigma around this issue is disappearing, and It is no longer uncommon for adults to wear braces. Aligners may be an alternative to fixed braces in some cases where visibility is a key factor. Alternatively, white (ceramic) brackets can be used to provide a more discreet appearance.

It can be possible to artificially straighten teeth using composite bonding or crowns and veneers to create a visually level, even smile. In some cases, this can be a suitable approach. However, we are seeing some cases carried out overseas (notably Turkey) where the techniques are very destructive. In these cases, the result of a straight smile comes at a cost of damaging tooth health and increasing the risk of future problems. 

By moving the teeth to the correct position with braces we preserve the tooth tissue and promote a better long-term approach which lasts for years to come.
