Hygiene & Prevention.

Good oral hygiene is the foundation to a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile. Natalie – our dental therapist – will work with you, both on home cleaning regimes and by in-surgery treatment, to get your teeth fabulously clean. Our patients all comment on how thorough and gentle she is, and she’ll remove those plaque and tartar deposits with minimum fuss and get you smiling again. At Skipton Road, we’re all about prevention, and we’ll spend time optimising your diet, maximising protective tooth treatments and ensuring you’ve got the basis for health and function. Regular dental check-ups help prevent problems before they develop.

FAQ:

Gum disease is a process whereby your gums become first inflamed and then, in more advanced stages, destruction of the surrounding tooth foundations (bone and ligament) becomes an issue. We refer to the initial inflammation stage as ‘gingivitis’ and the more advanced form of gum disease as ‘periodontitis’. Underpinning the process is plaque bacteria which irritates the tissues and triggers inflammatory responses. Therefore, a large amount of our focus in treating this problem lies in removing plaque deposits and maintaining good oral hygiene.

Airflow polishing is a new method of cleaning with is essentially similar to jet washing the teeth. The stream of water which blasts the teeth contains mild abrasive powder (completely safe to the tooth structure). Airflow can be an excellent way of removing stain from the tooth surface and brightening your smile again.

Hygiene work can be a great way to remove surface staining, but where staining affects fillings or if the staining is caused by tooth decay, for example, other treatments may need to be utilised alongside hygiene work to provide the best result.

Bad breath (halitosis) can be caused by many factors. A common cause of bad breath is gum disease. With this condition, small pockets form under the gum which collect bacteria and food products. This leads to an associated odour. Other causes of bad breath include, dental infections, dental cavities, dehydration & dry mouth, throat infections, ketone diets and digestive problems.

Tooth treatments may include, high concentration fluoride varnishes, fissure sealants, prescription fluoride toothpastes, calcium pastes and protective fluoride trays to wear at night. Ask your dentist for details to see what might be suitable for you.

This depends on your current situation. Patients with gum disease might see the hygienist every three months. Whereas other patients may only need hygiene work every six or 12 months. Your home regime will play a fundamental role in this process and it’s likely we’ll spend time refining your techniques to ensure you get the most out of this process.

Dental Hygiene Appointments.

Hygiene appointments play an important role in keeping your mouth healthy. A professional clean can remove plaque and tartar that brushing alone cannot always reach.

This can help reduce the risk of gum disease, freshen your breath, and keep your teeth feeling cleaner and healthier.
